It has been an extremely busy week in our classroom! I did get behind on grading this week, but all grades are now posted and current. All of your child's work from this week will be coming home in their Friday folder. We are approaching the end of first quarter (I can't believe it already!!!), so please remind your child to continue to stay focused and do their best. I encourage them to take their time and double check ALL of their work!
I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend! I am hoping to relax and enjoy the family!

Marble Celebration
Our class has earned another marble celebration so tomorrow is COSTUME DAY!
Please make sure that your child wears a school appropriate costume if they choose to participate. I have asked that they not dress as witches, vampires, etc. Also, no full face makeup is permitted. Otherwise, have fun

Sept. 20th Information and Updates
We had a very chatty day in class today. There were a lot of disruptions to the learning environment. Please take a moment to talk to your child and remind them of the importance of following classroom expectations and only talking during appropriate times or after raising their hand and being called on. We have a lot to cover throughout the year, and I want to allow everyone the opportunity to learn without disruptions or distractions!
· Please send in a picture of your child’s grandparent as soon as possible! Grandparent’s Day is Monday at 12:30 and we have a project to complete. A digital picture is perfect and you can just email me a copy!
· I sent out an online signup for Parent Teacher conferences. So far this is working great! If you have not yet signed up, please do so at your earliest convenience. This link is http://www.signupgenius.com/go/parent1205

September 16th Updates and Information
• Mid-quarter grades are coming home today. Please be sure to look these over and sign and return them in your child’s Friday folder.
• If you have any questions regarding grades, please remember that it is the middle of first quarter and we do not have very many grades at this time. One poor grade can significantly lower your child’s average. You can check grades regularly on Powerschool and if you have any questions please contact me!
• Grandparents’ Day is September 26th. We are putting together a special project for which we will need a picture of your child with a grandparent, or just a picture of the grandparent. The sooner you can send in those pictures, the better!
• Please continue to read at home and practice multiplication facts. We have made amazing progress already this year!
• Please check the blog regularly for updates, information, and great links. Visit the blog and you can subscribe by email so that anything new will be forwarded to you automatically!

Supporting Your Child's Learning at Home
Often parents ask me, "What can I do at home to support my child's learning?" Under the Parent Link above, I have included a tip sheet with lots of great ideas and resources. You can also make use of the websites that we use in class, and STUDY ISLAND is a fabulous way to review skills and practice. Your child's login information was given to them last week and should be in their Buddy Binder.
Happy Learning and Practicing!

Weekly Updates
Happy Friday! I hope that everyone has time to relax this weekend. I am so excited to have another weekend of nice weather!
A few reminders for the week:
• Book Orders are due on Friday, September 16th. Please feel free to order online or send in a check. For every online order we earn a free book for the class!
• Fundraiser information went home yesterday. Take some time to look this over. These fundraisers help to supply many of the great things we have and do here at Mathews!
• Mid-quarter grades will go home next Friday, September 16th in your child’s Friday folder. You may also stay updated through Powerschool. I make every attempt to get those grades entered as soon as possible!
• We have an amazing class! Everyone worked together this week as we did a lot of learning about Native Americans. I am proud of all of our SOARing students who have great character!
• We will be taking our Acuity tests in Communication Arts this Tuesday. This is a new test that we are implementing in the district this year and it will help me to assess your child’s learning abilities and needs. Please make sure they get a good night’s sleep on Monday and have a good breakfast Tuesday morning!
Have a great weekend!

This week
I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the extended weekend! My family visited from St. Louis and Cincinnati, Ohio so it was a very busy weekend, but we had a great time!
We are going to start school on Tuesday ready to hit the ground running. I would like to remind everyone to continue working on multiplication facts at home, and to READ! READ! READ! One struggle that many of the students are having is chosing a book and sticking with it. While I definitely want them to read a wide variety of materials, it is very important that students are choosing books that are on their level and are books that will provide them with an ongoing storyline to follow. This can be either fiction or non-fiction. I have asked students to be sure to check out at least one chapter book when they go to library on Fridays. We also have a wide variety of chapter books in the classroom.
I am going to spend time speaking with each student individually this week to determine reading levels and preferences, and to provide them with guidance in choosing books that will work well for them.
